School History

Hebrew Primary School, the only Jewish primary school in Gibraltar, has a rich history that reflects the deep-rooted presence and contributions of the Jewish community on the Rock. The school was established with a clear vision to provide a high-quality education that integrates both National Curriculum and Jewish studies, ensuring that children grow up with a strong sense of their cultural and religious heritage. Over the years, the school has become a cornerstone of Gibraltar's Jewish community, preserving traditions and values while adapting to the changing needs of modern education.

Throughout its history, Hebrew Primary School has remained committed to fostering a nurturing and inclusive environment where children can thrive academically and personally. The school has continuously evolved, expanding its curriculum and facilities to meet the needs of its growing student body. Despite being the only Jewish primary school in Gibraltar, it has maintained strong ties with the broader Gibraltarian community, building bridges through education and shared values. The school's legacy is one of resilience, adaptability, and a steadfast dedication to the holistic development of its pupils, preparing them to be proud, well-rounded individuals who contribute positively to society.

The Talmud Torah school began in 1700, offering Jewish Studies within the synagogue complex at Engineer Lane. From 1876, secular tuition was offered too. Initially, the school was funded by members of the Jewish Community but by the late 19th century, it came under the aegis of the Colonial Inspectors of Schools in Gibraltar. In 1893, the school moved from Cornwall’s Lane to College Lane, moving back to its original premises within the Synagogue complex once again. In 1894, the Colonial Secretary to the Crown Lands Officer recommended that a purpose build school be built in Bomb House Lane. A letter was sent to the Hebrew School Building Committee informing them that permission for construction had been granted for strictly educational purposes. The cornerstone was laid in an official ceremony in 1895 and officiated by the Rabbi of Gibraltar-Dayan Refael Haim Moshe Benaim. It took three years until the building was completed.

In the 1950’s the Government of Gibraltar took over the running of the school and in 1974, a new Education Act meant this was a more formal arrangement. By 2011, an extension was required to accommodate the school’s growing numbers. On 6th October 2011, this was inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Hon.P.R. Caruana QC in the presence of the Minister for Education, Hon C.G. Beltran. Until 2024, all National Curriculum studies took place in the morning and Talmud Torah took place in the afternoons. The community voted to create a more integrated model and from September 2024, Hebrew Primary School and Talmud Torah will be amalgamated under one leadership team, similar to the Voluntary Aided model in the UK.
